Summer Arts at

The Little Yellow Building

Cultivating Creativity, Together.

Summer at The Little Yellow Building brings a wonderful opportunity for young artists to immerse themselves in creativity and grow their skills. Our Summer Arts program offers a supportive space where children can explore new techniques, deepen their understanding, and discover the joy of making art. Whether your child is just starting their artistic journey or looking to build on their existing talents, our focused camps aim to nurture their abilities and confidence.

Summer Bootcamps: Building Strong Foundations, Day by Day

Our Summer Bootcamps are designed to help students build fundamental art skills in a concentrated, five-day format. We've found that learning a little bit each day, and then reinforcing it immediately, can make a real difference in how quickly skills are absorbed and remembered. It's about building good habits and seeing noticeable progress in a short amount of time.

Each day in a Bootcamp is planned to help students progressively develop their understanding. By the end of the week, they’ll have experience in planning their own projects and approaching their ideas in manageable steps.

June:

  • Level 1 Drawing Bootcamp: A friendly introduction to drawing essentials. We'll explore materials, how to hold your pencil effectively, understanding different lines (for sketching versus outlining), breaking down what you see into simple shapes for size and proportion, and getting a feel for shadows, value, shading, and negative space. It’s a comfortable starting point for beginners or a good refresher.

  • Level 2 Drawing Bootcamp: For students comfortable with Level 1 basics, this camp builds on those foundations, exploring more involved drawing techniques to deepen their artistic insights.

July:

  • Level 1 Painting Bootcamp: We’ll gently guide students through the basics of painting, focusing on understanding colors, brush handling, mixing paints, layering, and getting comfortable with core painting techniques.

  • Level 2 Painting Bootcamp: This camp is for students with some painting experience, offering a chance to delve into broader color palettes, textures, composition, and beginning to shape a personal painting style.

Wildcard Camps: Exploring New Horizons

Our Wildcard Camps are a chance to step a little outside the usual and explore specific artistic concepts or mediums in a fun, experimental way. The themes for these camps often come from interests the kids show during the year, or ideas that keep my own creative spirit buzzing!

These camps tend to be for students at Level 2 and above, as they focus on exploring one main technique or idea. While we don't typically cover fundamental basics unless it directly relates to the camp's focus, students should feel comfortable with general art skills like sketching, color mixing, and thinking about compositions.

  • Past Wildcards have included: A digital art camp focused on creating a complete picture using Adobe Fresco, and a "Camp Warhol" where students learned traditional silk screen techniques, enjoying plenty of time to play with layers and color separation.

Why Our Summer Camps Might Be a Good Fit:

At The Little Yellow Building, my main goal is to help each child genuinely "get" the concepts we're exploring. I truly care about their understanding and progress, and I'll always try to find the best examples or ways of explaining things to help them click. I pay close attention to where each student is in their artistic journey, and I’m always here to talk with parents about their child's art and growth.

These camps are a great option for:

  • Children who may not have access to regular art programs during the school year.

  • Students already enjoying a yearly program who want a focused week to build their skills further.

  • Anyone looking for a welcoming place to start or enhance their artistic journey.
