THE LITTLE YELLOW BUILDING

Mary-Saphrona Grey

Yazoo City, Mississippi
"I grew up in Yazoo City, MS and have since returned home after graduating from Hinds Community College and Mississippi College. While my main medium is oil and acrylic paint I also work in ink, charcoal, pencil, gauche, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop."
"I am attracted to art and painting as a storytelling tool, and as a method to understand the world and confront difficult situations and life changes. My work tends to feature bright colors in a stylized realism reflecting my love and admiration for artists of the Golden Age of Illustration; such as Rockwell and Leyendecker, and also contemporary artists like illustrator Kai Carpenter, and Texas painter Sari Shryak. My more recent work has taken on an almost autobiographical lens. I’ve begun chronicling my personal challenges within relationships and my own mental health issues, and also the stress of balancing everyday life. When you look at this work you are oftentimes seeing an intimate snapshot of my mind. Containing the things that I wish to say but often fail to find the words to speak out loud."
