L C Ulmer
Lee Chester Ulmer was born in Stringer, Mississippi, in 1928.
By the age of nine, Ulmer played with his family and other musicians on the family's porch.
On one of his many trips to Laurel growing up, he discovered street musician Blind Roosevelt Graves. Ulmer studied Grave's use of the slide guitar and later would make his own out of stainless steel.
In the early '40s, when he was around 14, Ulmer began finding what he could for work and playing juke joints at night. He would use that to travel all over the country, building his reputation as the "12 piece" one-person band.
In 1962 Ulmer moved back to Laurel and put together a band called the Bel Air Clowns.
LC Ulmer was an experimental musician who never stopped exploring what his tools were capable of.
